Korlai Fort - The 271 feet high Korlai Fort is of the Jaldurg type. Korlai fort in the Alibag hill range of Raigad district is considered moderate by trekkers. Alibaug is a famous place. The beach here and the Colaba Fort are seen by all. 15-20 Km. A coat of gravel above and further 3-4 kms. Above is the fort of Korlai. Revdandya can be reached by bus. From here we cross the bridge over Kundlike creek and reach Koliwada at the foothills of Korlai.
This fort is a bit different. Because it is located at the mouth of Kundalika creek. That is why Pandit Mahadev Shastri Joshi has glorified it as 'This is the Tirthopadhaya of Pritisangam where Kundlike embraced Sindhusagara.' It is surrounded by ocean on all three sides.
History of Korlai FortKorlai Fort In 1521 Diogu Lopish de Sicair, a Portuguese governor, sought permission from the Nizamshah to build a battery of shocks and crosses on the rocks of Chaul near Revdandya and built them. Revdanda is one of the main stations of the Portuguese. Here is a strong quote. In 1594, taking advantage of the instability caused by the death of the first Burhan Nizam, the Firangis tried to build a fort on the rock of Chaul.Hussain Nizam refused and decided to build a strong fort himself. In a conflict, both fell and a treaty was signed. It was decided that the Nizam should not build the fort. And the Portuguese should not give any maritime nuisance.
But the second Burhan Nizam built a strong fort here despite the Portuguese. Once a Sardar Fattekhan fired guns at Revdanda and tried to defeat the Portuguese. As the Portuguese found kumak insufficient, they asked for more. And attacked Korlai himself in response. The Portuguese entered the fort and killed one of the Nizam's elephants. Finally they took the fort. But after taking the fort, they had to make strict arrangements. According to one mention, there were 8000 shibandis here in 1602.
Due to all this occupation, they built a fort and demolished many structures. In 1683, Sambhaji Maharaj made an unsuccessful attempt to capture Korlai. In 1739, Chimaji Appa sent Subhanrao Mankara to Korlai and the fort was captured within a year. The Marathas changed the names of the towers and renamed San Diego as Pusti Burj and San Francisco as Ganesh Burj.
Places to see in Korlai FortAfter entering through the entrance here, we are only 10 m. Wide walks on such a place. This fort. A panoramic view can be seen from here. On one side small boats can be seen on the blue sea, while on the other side we see the meeting of the bay and the sea. There are remains of a north-facing church. Now we turn to the north.First we have to enter through a gate guarded by two towers. The tower facing the sea is called San Diego and the tower facing the bay is called San Francisco.
Here we find some ruins. Below the main fort is a liquor store near the ramparts to the west. Guns were placed on the west and north ramparts. Here we find mention of 70 guns and 8000 shibandis. Now if we turn a little north we reach the loft here. It is called Battery of the Cross or Santa Cruz. It is approximately 3 m. There is a long loft. In short, this fortress of Portuguese haircuts easily compels us to revel in its beauty.
First of all we have to reach Revdanda. State Transport Mandlai service is available here. From here to Korlai village we reach the base of the fort in 20 minutes by rickshaw. Or the bus to Murud-Janjira drops us at the village gate. There is a beautiful beach at the base of the fort. We can reach the fort through two routes. One is from the beach, from here we reach the top of Korlai within 40 minutes by climbing stairs.
There is no accommodation at the fort. It can happen in the village. We have to arrange food ourselves. Drinking water is not available at the fort. It takes 1 hour to reach the fort.
